Do I need to take vitamins during pregnancy?
I’m sure you will want to do everything right during pregnancy and make sure your baby is well looked after. It has been scientifically proven that an adequate supply of vitamins and minerals is important for mothers and babies, but you might ask yourself whether you have to take vitamins during pregnancy.
Vitamins during pregnancy – do not underestimate the need for nutrients
The myth that you have to eat for two during your pregnancy has already been refuted. During the first 16 weeks of pregnancy you do not need an increased calorie intake however this does not apply to vitamins during pregnancy. They are an important factor for the immune system and for the nervous system. If you provide your own body with enough vitamins, you will notice that you can fight diseases better and feel less tired. The nutritional requirements during pregnancy are different again, your baby depends on you to provide it with the most important nutrients. Some of these should also be added to the food intake.
Folic acid: a particularly important component
Vitamins for pregnant women usually contain one of the most important vitamins for your baby: folic acid. This is a B vitamin that helps to improve the maturation of red blood cells and the healthy growth of cells. The need for folic acid during pregnancy is increased and this need cannot always be met by food alone. For example, if you suffer from severe nausea in the first few weeks, vitamin should be taken to ensure an adequate supply of folic acid.
Tip: Of course you can also absorb folic acid very well via food. A very good choice in this case is green vegetables. Both spinach, broccoli and asparagus contain the valuable vitamin.
Vitamins during pregnancy –
You don’t only have to take vitamin supplements, you can also supply your growing baby with vitamins from the food you eat. It is important to know which vitamins are needed and in what foods you can find them. A very good vitamin to have is vitamin A, this protects cells and can be found in fish and carrots as well as apricots and red peppers. Remember, however, that peppers are very often heavily contaminated with pesticides so its better to avoid them or buy organic.
Vitamin C is important for your baby’s bones to grow properly and cell respiration to be optimally supported. Citrus fruits are rich in the vitamin, but also have a high acid content -you can also eat fennel or Brussels sprouts instead.
B vitamins have many advantages for you and your baby. They ensure a healthy heart and a strong nervous system, support metabolism and blood formation. They can be found in beans fish and poultry as well as wholemeal products.
Please don’t do it all at once
The best idea is to take the vitamins throughout the day during pregnancy. Start the day with a freshly squeezed juice, snack on vegetables with soft cheese in between meals. You can enjoy a fresh meal for lunch and end the evening with some raw vegetables.
